What Is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) combines psychotherapy with hypnosis. Using it, I help people make significant, positive changes in their lives. I use practical, modern and well researched strategies to quickly achieve lasting changes. Using a questioning process you can uncover positive solutions that will be of most benefit to you.

I use a powerful questioning technique known as Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). This will help you find solutions to move forward past the perceived problems. This will create positive life changes in a relatively short period of time. You do NOT have to dwell on past problems or even reveal what the problem is.
I use hypnosis to positively amplify the effects of the SFBT element of the session. As a result of being in this relaxed state, your mind is more responsive to suggestion. I use beneficial suggestions to help you change unhelpful thought patterns. The suggestions relate to boost feelings of confidence, self-esteem and control.

What Conditions Can It Help?

The following list represents some of the major areas I work with using solution focused hypnotherapy. The list is not exhaustive, so please give me a call or email me if you need further information. Check out the Treatments menu for further information on some conditions.

General anxiety is the majority of my work. Anxiety can be experienced through general feelings of nervousness or anxiety, sleep disturbances, panic attacks, blushing, stammer, exams, driving test nerves, fear of public speaking or stage fright. Anxiety comes in many forms.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a gentle but powerful approach to solving the problem. It focuses on the positive aspects of your life and stays away from fixating on the negative. During the deeply relaxing sessions you develop the ability to control the anxiety and feel comfortable in all situations. When you feel confident, calm and relaxed, and this will happen over time, you will have a new positive, and robust outlook.

I have a keen interest in helping clients overcome insomnia and improve their sleep patterns. So often people have lived for many years with this problem, which in the main can be easily sorted. It is recommended you check with your GP to ensure there are no medical reasons for the insomnia.

Sleep has an important purpose and prolonged periods of sleeplessness can lead to irritability, weight gain, fatigue, and lack of motivation at work and at home. Loved ones can bear the brunt of our tiredness as we become ill tempered and irritable. Work performance may suffer and feelings of anger may start to creep into our thoughts.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you empty your stress bucket which in turn helps you get to sleep and stay asleep right through the night.

A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder. Often you will feel the symptoms when you come in contact with the trigger phobia, but for some people, the symptoms can arise just by thinking about it. When you find the source of your phobia, you can feel incredibly scared, nervous, and anxious. You may also experience physical symptoms of fear and anxiety, such as:
  • Sweating
  • Dizziness
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Nausea
  • Stomach ache
If the source of your phobia is something you don’t come into contact with often, that phobia may not interfere with your daily life. If it’s something that you are likely to come in contact with on a day-to-day basis, your phobia may have a bigger impact on your life. It doesn't matter if the trigger is a real world thing/event or imaginary as the phobic response is the same.

In many ways, panic attacks have much in common with a post-traumatic stress reaction. If you have experienced a full blown panic attack, you might well rate it as the highest level of fear you could ever experience. Indeed, it is utterly terrifying and you will probably have been convinced you were dying.

The experience is usually so catastrophic that it stays vividly in your mind and, when it happens again, and again, it is no surprise that your life starts to fall to pieces. The normal reaction is to do anything to avoid situations where panic might occur. You are never quite sure that it won't happen in completely new, as yet unsuspected, situations and circumstances.

Sometimes people suffering from panic attacks will have visited their doctor at some point, frightened that they have a heart condition or some other life-threatening illness; or they may have gone straight to the accident and emergency department at their local hospital where they were thoroughly checked out and told they were fine. Of course that didn't make sense because they knew they weren't fine.

Statistics show that 1 in 4 Britons will suffer from a mental health problem within a given year, with anxiety and depression being the most common combination of mental health disorders in the UK. Between 8 and 12 percent of the population will struggle with depression and the effects on home, career, relationships and personal esteem are enormous. Hypnotherapy can be a real and effective tool for helping with depression. The Solution Focused approach engages the persons mind to use those natural and internal resources. This empowering process, gives you the necessary confidence and control to start living you life just as you wish.
Lack of confidence and low esteem can have a detrimental effect on our lives, whether it is associated with our relationships, at work, at home or when we are socialising. Through hypnosis it’s possible to access the subconscious mind where negative beliefs, thoughts and behaviours can be revised and replaced. The result is a new and motivated attitude with increased self- belief and confidence.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that is characterised by having uncontrollable obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are unwanted, persistent and sometimes intrusive thoughts, images or impulses that cause emotional distress. Obsessions can cause the individual to act out certain repetitive behaviours or additional mental acts (called compulsions) in order to immediately reduce the distress of the obsession.

It is estimated that about three quarters of a million people in UK suffer with obsessive compulsive disorder, with about half of those being affected severely. It tends to interfere with the majority of people’s lives around early adulthood, but can be problematic at any age.
The following non-exhaustive lists shows addictions and habits that may be helped with hypnosis if the client wants to change and understands that full client commitment is essential.
  • Smoking
  • alcohol dependency
  • nail biting
  • bed-wetting
  • gambling
  • OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
Chronic Pain is a persistent or recurrent pain lasting longer than 3 months. Often starting with an injury, an ongoing cause of pain, and sometimes with no obvious explanation. Common complaints include headaches, back pain, cancer pain, arthritis pain, and neuropathic pain. Clinical Hypnotherapy can help alleviate Chronic Pain, by dialling down your body's perception of pain. Pain has been seen to lessen using the gentle power of hypnotherapy. See Time's article on "surgery whilst under hypnosis" as a guide to what can be achieved.
IBS is a condition of the digestive system. IBS symptoms can cause extreme discomfort with stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and/or constipation. The symptoms of IBS tend to come and go and are often triggered during periods of stress or after eating certain foods. Symptoms tend to vary between individuals and can affect some people more than others. However, most people suffer from stomach cramps before experiencing either diarrhoea, constipation, or bouts of both. The cause of IBS in unclear but we do know that it can be aggravated by stress.
